Position Description: Technical Director

Position Description and Requirements:
The Technical Director is responsible for designing, developing and improving production focused pipeline workflow processes. Technical Directors may also be called on to do shot work when necessary during production.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, prototype and implement artist-focused production tools, using Maya, Mentalray, Fusion, Python, MEL, and C++.
Collaborate with Production Management on utilization of production tools and workflow processes.
Troubleshoot production problems, and proactively work to minimize their impact.
Design and execute project work plans to produce known deliverables on a pre-determined timetable.
Be aware of new technologies, techniques, and processes that will benefit studio’s production processes for current and future projects.
Share and present new research, ideas and technology with others in the studio.
Perform shot work/fixes as required during production.
Minimum Qualifications and Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent job experience
3+ Years of (CG) Experience, Feature Film experience preferred
Experience working with Maya, Mentalray, MTMR, Fusion, or equivalents.
Experience with WxPython
Experience using various scripting languages - primarily Python, Mel, CShell
Experience in C/C++ or some other object-oriented programming language
Experience with subversion, cvs or another revision control system
Experience designing user interfaces

• Be able to work with lighting artists to provide guidance and assist in problem solving
Experience Required:
• Feature Film experience required
• Thorough knowledge of Maya and Mental Ray
• Advanced understanding of lighting and advanced shading networks
• Good balance between artistic and technical skills
• Advanced knowledge of Fusion or similar node based compositing package
• Be able to properly assess appropriate balance of lighting and compositing for a given shot
• Python & UNIX knowledge a plus
• Knowledge of modeling, animation, FX and surfacing a plus

In this position you will conceptualize & create 3D computer-generated models from 2D designs (characters, locations and props). In addition to reviewing models for complex movements, you will establish rigging procedures and suggest changes when necessary. The successful candidates will also create and apply UVs and textures needed to achieve desired surface qualities for the completion of models.

·Experience with polygon modeling, utility nodes, and rigging techniques.

Layouts(line art only, no color) need to be done in Flash. We use CS3 but can work with freelancers using Flash 8

Starz Animation, Toronto, multiple positions
Starz is doing a bit of hiring.
Currently we have an opening for a top-end Rigger. The ideal candidate must have CG feature experience, be a maya pro and have management/lead experience.
Starz has an opening for a senior TD also. Surfacing and Lighting are to two skillsets or familiar zones this TD must know the best. He/She must also have some skills writing shaders.
There is also a position open for a top admin person to assist a Producer and Associate Producer. This is someone who is an organizational wiz, an everready bunny of energy and positivity, and used to being in an ever-changing production environment.

This person is responsible for the overall look and style of the show. They work with the creative team to help establish the creative direction of the project. They are responsible for interpreting the ideas of the creative team and lead a design team who will, as a joint effort, put these ideas into designs that are ready for production.This person demonstrates strong visual interpretation skills and is able to come up with innovative and creative ideas that are production friendly.
This person is also a leader within the design department and able to motivate his/her team through good communication and feedback.
RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES
- Provide detailed direction to design team on every assignment
- Meet client’s needs with production needs, and communicate this to designers
- Suggest ways to improve the designs
- Ensure design is in keeping with modeling time (i.e. not over designed or under designed)
- Resolve conflicts between departments over designs
- Deal with clients on designs that need special direction
- Communicate effective and production-friendly solutions when the requests of the client are not possible within production timelines
- Go over submitted designs, make sure they are in show style and in keeping with client and story specifications
- Send out revisions with clear directions for changes
- Deal with problems in the VFX, Modelling Departments, as relates to the design and look of the show.
- Attend breakdown meetings and give input from the Art Department’s point of view
- Help devise a plan for staging the episode in an aesthetically pleasing, but achievable manner
- Help find time-efficient ways to make new parts of the show work – i.e. 3D set, 2D elements
- Ensure the show stays on style
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years in Art Direction
- BA/BFA Degree in Fine Arts or Commercial Arts field an asset
- Must have strong 2D design experience and able to design a wide variety of landscapes, including architectural, organic/vegetation, geological formations
- Experience in multimedia content, film and television work
- 3D design and modeling experience an asset
- Must possess excellent communications, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills
· Self management and reviewing one’s own schedule is required, as is notifying production of any tasks that may be missing or improperly specified
- Thrive in a high pressure, deadline oriented environment
- Enjoy working in team atmosphere and has a proactive approach to work
